The gang from RSRL got together for their first points paying race this last Tuesday. Close to twenty drivers made the trip to the high banks of Daytona Speedway for the event. Drivers took to the track for practice and it wasnt long before guys were trying three wide getting a feel for their trucks and what they would do in race conditions. Naturally the three wide led to some bent sheet metal and it wasnt long before a few tempers flared. This was just practice and that usually leads to guys doing things they wouldnt do in a race. Thats all that came of it and crew chiefs made the changes to make ready for qualifing.
Mike Grandy would put his truck in the number one starting spot on the grid. Steve Ritter would start outside pole followed closely by Jeff Sharp and Rob Frieary in the second row. There were a few drivers that chose not to qualify thinking they might have a better chance for a good finish in the rear. Wonder how that will work for them.
The race starts out calm with drivers using caution. There was a group of five drivers in the rear that lost touch with the pack within the first five laps. Drivers were all keeping their heads and Garndy continued to show the way. The race would continue to go green through the pit cycles. Kevin Kyle and Mike Kelly would stay out to grab the valuble bonus point for laps lead.
Drivers would get seperated into several small packs through the pit stops as the crew chiefs made several errors in taking tires and too much fuel when it wasnt needed. This hurt a few of the drivers that would have normally been in the hunt for the win. Instead they found themselves playing catch up, having to settle for getting the best result the race would give them. Two cars got together on lap 22 while they were pitting but it wasnt enough to bring out the caution. The race rolled on.
In the end the strong drive of Magic Mike Grandy brought home the win. The race went green from start to finish and drivers reported that it was a fun race as a whole. Some thought the fun ended too soon, meaning the race was not long enough. Thirteen of the nineteen running the race would take advantage of the bonus points given for driving an incident free race. Brett Stephens gets a shout and coveted mention in the race report for being the Hard Charger gaining five positions from his starting spot.
Congrats again to Mike Grandy and we all look forward to next Tuesday when the drivers head to Lowes for next weeks event. Hope to see you there.
